When I photograph on the streets of India, I am not just photographing what is in front of me.
There is a version of street photography that is about documentation — capturing the world as it is, neutrally and accurately. I respect that tradition. But it has never been my tradition.
When I photograph on the streets of Kolkata or Varanasi, I am not just photographing what is in front of me. I am photographing my relationship with it. Photography becomes personal when you stop thinking of yourself as a recorder and start thinking of yourself as a participant.
